Content

Writing is an area in which many EAL learners demonstrate a lack of understanding of the complexity of the English language. Speaking and listening activities reinforce and extend children’s developing reading and writing skills. Most children try out ideas in talk long before they are able to pin them down in writing. This course will focus on:
• explore the potential barriers to successful writing for EAL learners
• provide guidance on successful strategies to support the development of writing
• expectations of progress and identification of whole class / intervention strategies which can enable children to develop their writing and meet age appropriate expectations these approaches are equally relevant to monolingual pupils who struggle with writing

Outcomes

Delegates will explore:
• the process of children’s additional language development when they are in the early stages of developing English competency in writing
• barriers to becoming a successful writer
• strategies to develop writing accuracy including sentence structure, grammar, usage of Tier 2 and 3 vocabulary in writing
• using speaking, listening and reading strategies to broaden and deepen vocabulary usage to engage the reader of their writing
• supporting the development of EAL children’s independent writing
