This session provides six practical recommendations, underpinned by high quality evidence, about how to make meaningful improvements to primary science teaching. It is designed to help practitioners build on their existing expertise with a view to supporting them to close the attainment gap and cultivate positive pupil attitudes towards science.

Aimed at science leads, class teachers, headteachers, and other staff with leadership responsibility in primary schools.

Outcomes

Schools will consider how to:

Develop pupils’ scientific vocabulary
Encourage pupils to explain their thinking, whether verbally or in written form
Guide pupils to work scientifically
Relate new learning to relevant, real-world contexts
Use assessment to support learning and responsive teaching
Strengthen science teaching through effective professional development, as part of an implementation process.
